PRESENTATION ABSTRACT: Nubian Land and Dams; From Destructive Practices to Equitable Development
Sat., 10/02/21 • 1:30pm est • Session A
The intention of development is to improve the economy and achieve a better life for the community. However, if this is not done properly it may cause more losses than benefits, and may even become destructive development, as is the case in the Nubian land in Sudan.
In Nubia, there have been destructive development projects in the form of large dams, but this must be redirected to move toward fair development. Fair Development will require these 4 steps:
- Raise public awareness about the importance of learning and preserving their history;
- Identify existing and potential archaeological sites;
- Issue guidelines and policies for development within (or in the vicinity of) these archaeological sites; and
- Make permits compulsory for all development projects within (or in the vicinity) of these sites.
